The Rising Popularity of the Ebook

As technology is advancing exponentially, even our way of reading has changed. Books always reek at paper and ink. Ah yes, holding a book with sweaty hands certainly released the smell of an old fashioned book. One of the healthiest ways of entertainment/ self-improvement. Of course, books have changed a bit. They aren't hand-written by monks anymore. And the cover isn't leather. The kind of paper is usually chemically manufactured, whether it be to prevent copying or keeping the book sustainable. Pictures are in color and printed with super technology. Yet, it is ironic how such simple objects are made with million dollar state of the art electronic machinery. The book itself has not changed much since the day it was made. That changed when the ebooks were introduced.

So what is an eBook exactly? Does it have legs and talk to you, asking which book you would like to read today? Indeed that would be awesome. Ebooks are basically virtual books. You download them on your PC, laptop, notebook or tablet to read. One might ask what the benefits are of such an ebook. Is it worth buying a virtual book and staring at a screen for hours and hours? Most of the time books are read for relaxation, perhaps before going to bed or during a break. Staring at an electronic screen only makes your eyes hurt when done so for a long period of time. Whether it is worth to buy an eBook is up to you. A big benefit, regardless of anyone's preference is the fact that books are very mobile as ebooks. No more packing 5 books when you go on vacation. A tablet for example, could allow you to surf the web, text message, watch videos AND read books all in one. In a world where technology becomes smaller and smaller (except for TVs) the eBook is becoming very popular. Especially with tablets which are compact.

Another benefit is the capability of editing the book. Usually when you purchase the book, you are presented with the final version. If the author would like to add something or has an up to date edition of his or her book it is not possible to give it to you unless you buy another copy. Ebooks are virtual and updating to a newer edition is a matter of going online and downloading it. Furthermore, making notes might be hard to do in a paper book, because once you use a marker it is not possible to undue this. Even with pencils, it is tedious to remove if you regret using it in the future. Digitally, this is no problem of course. Just a matter of using an erasing tool in your eBook reader.

Again, whether ebooks are a revolution we should be thankful of is a matter of taste. It is a fact though, that our lives are becoming more and more virtual. Theaters and operas had to make room for TVs. Board and card games had to make room for video games and now it's the books turn, which has to make room for virtual books. And although the essence, smell and experience of a conventional book could never be replaced, a digital alternative can come in handy sometimes.
